The great wall of China

The great wall of China

The great wall of China – one of the outstanding achievements of engineering thought, one of the iconic symbols of China. Construction of this impressive facility began in the fourth century BC and lasted for several centuries.

Actually, the Great wall of China – it is three walls, a length of about 5 thousand kilometers. Some parts of fortifications were built even before the great construction. However, the construction began under the Emperor Qin Shi Juan, which gathered a great army of builders of representatives from peasant, warrior castes. Also in these works used the labor of criminals and prisoners. The wall was created in order to protect the country from attacks by the warlike Mongols from the North, and as proofs of the greatness of the Emperor. Needless to say that the construction was carried out with the greatest toll in human lives and in popular mythology, the building was called the “wailing wall”. One of the Chinese ancient legends tells that the wall was destroyed by the tears of the wife by the spouse, who died at the construction site.

The construction of the wall began in other time, in the Han dynasty, which ruled from 206 BC to 220 ad. Centuries later, in 607 year the wall was rebuilt, and to perform large-scale works took about one million workers.

Exactly the same number of people needed for the construction of the third wall of the Ming dynasty, who ruled in the years 1368-1644. That’s when the wall gets its present appearance.

Each tower of the great wall is located in the zone of visibility of two adjacent towers. It is from here that quickly passed on the warning of danger – using drums, smoke and lights.

The great wall runs along a high and inaccessible mountain areas, and resembles a comb, which is literally rooted in impregnable mountains. From the Mongolian border through the mountains and the forest wall will last almost to the Imperial capital, Beijing.I must say that the wall is perfectly coped with its tasks and was virtually impregnable. The height of the wall is about 6.5 meters, the bottom wall has a width of 6 meters, and at the top is one meter. Watch towers were built every 120 meters, they had a height of 2 or 3 floors and served as housing for the garrison and weapons storage. Some of them were turned into fortresses and I must say that they were built very elegantly and with great taste. The outer part of the walls are made of bricks, while the inner part is filled with hard-Packed clay, so in its way this design is a huge and impressive earthen wall. In addition, the great wall was the road, built along the borders of China.

Of course, the Great wall of China is among the most impressive architectural structures of antiquity. For many centuries it has survived not only the attack, but the impact of strong winds, rains. For the world is a majestic and impressive building is a symbol of the country. But in China, you should definitely tell that one of the few man-made works of mankind, which can be seen even from space.
